Vitamin D3

Vitamin D performs important functions in the body.

Vitamins of group D are mainly produced by the human body, in the presence of UV solar radiation, they are also taken through food or in cases where there is a deficiency , supplementation is used.

Vitamin D3 is mainly supplied by foods of animal origin while vitamin D2 is present in important quantities in fungi and yeasts.

The reserves of vitamin D accumulated in the adipose tissue in the summer are not sufficient to cover the physiological needs of the individual during the winter season. In fact, in European latitudes, sunlight during the winter is not strong enough to produce satisfactory amounts of vitamin D3. Individuals who do not expose their skin to solar radiation are particularly at risk of vitamin D deficiencies, as are individuals with dark skin as skin pigmentation reduces UV-B radiation that stimulates cells to produce vitamin D.

Furthermore, the frequent use of sunscreens , now increasingly indispensable to protect the skin from damage from solar radiation, determines a decrease in the synthesis of vitamin D. In all these cases, therefore, vitamin D in the diet plays a fundamental role in covering in full the daily requirement.

Any excess of vitamin D is regulated by heat-induced mechanisms that lead to the production of inactive analogues.
