Nosy Be or Nossi-bé is an island just off the northwest coast of Madagascar. It belongs to the province of Antsiranana, and has 60,000 inhabitants. In Malagasy language, "Nosy Be" means "Big Island" (it is in fact the largest island of the archipelago) but it is known and nicknamed "Nosy Manitra" that is "Scented Island" thanks to the intense perfumes that are breathed in the air and everywhere on the island famous for its numerous plants and spices, in particular Ylang Ylang, vanilla, coffee, cocoa, pepper, geranium, cinnamon, frangipani, and plants typical of the North of Madagascar. The island is of volcanic origin, the tropical climate that regulates the seasons, make Nosy Be an island with an exceptional fauna and flora.

The Ylang Ylang is an imposing tree, it reaches up to 25 meters in height, and man
in order to be able to harvest it comfortably, it modifies the natural structure of the trunk through pruning and deviations of the branches, this work called "etetage" must be carried out 10 times a year to keep growth under control. Normally after being planted, it blooms after three years, after 5 it is already at its maximum splendor and lasts up to 50 years.

Ylang Ylang blooms all year round, has an intense and enveloping scent and has a
very marked olfactory evolution, fresher as soon as it is cut, oxidizes and develops notes
animalize as time passes. To extract the precious oil from the flower, the work begins early in the morning, at 5.30 and is harvested until 9 every day, all year round. Each parcel has 4 pickers, strictly women who with delicate and precise gestures collect only the ripe flowers to be distilled; it is important to collect only the ripe flowers, recognizable by a red mark inside the petal.
Each of them is entrusted with a specific area, they will take care of the plants and only pick the ripe flowers.

The distillation lasts 12 hours, the flowers will yield about 2% in total, so from the 300 kg of distilled flowers on average you will get 6 kg in total of Ylang Ylang essential oil.
However, the oil will be collected every 15 minutes (for 12 hours) and the density of each batch will be
analyzed to determine the quality of each fraction.
- Ylang Ylang Extra, density greater than 946. Only 2% of the entire annual extraction,
very few days a year it is possible to obtain the extra quality, the best!
