Vitamin K is an important component, essential for the synthesis of some factors that govern the coagulation process. Its deficiency in the infant (vitamin K is fat-soluble and since the placenta is crossed by fewer lipids it follows a limited passage from the mother to the fetus; moreover the immature liver of the infants is not able to produce prothrombin and the intestine in the first days of life does not synthesizes the sufficient amount of vitamin), in particular with breast-fed, can cause a bleeding disorder, called vitamin K deficiency haemorrhagic disease. For this reason it is recommended to be administered to all infants in the first three months of life even when it has been birth prophylaxis with vitamin K by intramuscular injection was performed.
