Phenylketonuria (PKU)

The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. In PKU, due to a lack or malfunction of an enzyme, the body is unable to metabolize one of these amino acids, phenylalanine. People with PKU must therefore drastically limit the amount of protein in their diet.

Protein substitutes are critically important in the management of PKU. Protein substitutes for PKU provide all amino acids found in proteins but not phenylalanine. Combined with the intake of a small amount of natural dietary protein, protein substitutes ensure that an individual with PKU has adequate protein intake.
