Curiosity

Poria (Poria cocos), which in Japanese is called bukuryo, is a saprophytic mushroom that grows in several species of pine and other conifers, commonly found in China, Japan, Korea and North America.

Poria is also known as the Root of China. Considered one of the oldest and most used remedies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is harvested in late summer and dried for a long time.

The poria has an irregular, rounded shape, reminiscent of that of a coconut also due to its brown color on the surface and white in the center. It is an edible mushroom and in the United States it is also called Indian bread or Wolfporia cocos: once cooked it reveals a soft texture and a sweet taste.

The interest in the use of mushrooms is linked to the presence of high molecular weight polysaccharides, in particular β (1,3-1,6) -D-glucans.
