WHAT ARE GERMINAL CELLS?

In the vegetable kingdom most of the plants are included in the group of Angiosperms (i.e. plants with flowers) which are distinguished from the other less evolved ones (mosses and ferns) precisely for the production of flowers followed by the formation of seeds enclosed and protected within the fruit.

Germ cells are those progenitor cells, produced by plants inside flowers and represented by pollen grains, able to differentiate to form the reproductive organs of the plant and then give rise to a new plant individual.

The main characteristic of germ cells is to give rise, through a process called meiosis, to gametes which have the peculiarity of being free from some forms of cellular aging caused by the progressive shortening of the extremity of their chromosomes, the telomeres.

In fact, in non-progenitor cells, called somatic cells, after a number of duplications from 50 to 70 times, cell growth stops due to the lack of telomerase to pass to a phase of senescence and therefore of crisis (apoptosis).

In germ cells this programmed aging process does not exist because the enzyme called telomerase intervenes which, unlike what happens in somatic cells, never fails and which allows the infinite reconstruction of telomeres and the continuous duplication of cells. This allows germ cells to be referred to as "immortalized" cells.
