Colostrum
It is the liquid produced by the mammary gland in the first 48-72 hours after birth and is rich in molecules that are biologically essential for immune and growth functions; in fact, it provides protection against infections in the first few weeks of a newborn's life. Some of the most important immune factors found in bovine colostrum include: immunoglobulins (the main active substances of colostrum), proline-rich polypeptides (PRP), lactoferrin, lectokines, some enzymes, glycoproteins, trypsin inhibitors, lysozyme, lelymphokines , oligo-polysaccharides and glycoconjugates. In general, the functions attributed to immunoglobulins include the neutralization of toxins and viruses of bacteria in the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
Lactoferrin
Also known as lactotransferrin, it is a multifunctional globular protein with antimicrobial activity, both bactericidal and fungicidal. Lactoferrin is never saturated with iron and its ferric content varies. It is found mainly in milk, but is present in many mucous secretions such as tears and saliva, and also protects newborns from gastrointestinal infections. The antimicrobial activity of lactoferrin is related to its affinity for Fe3 +. The combination of lactoferrin with ferric ion in mucous secretions modulates the activity and aggregation capacity of bacteria and viruses towards cell membranes. This is because some bacteria require iron to be able to carry out cell replication and lactoferrin, on the contrary, subtracts it from the surrounding environment, preventing its proliferation.
