Glutamine stabilizes the tight junctions that join the cells of the intestinal epithelium together, acting as an antioxidant against some harmful substances (ethanol) or as a consequence of a state of acidosis. Glutamine reduces intestinal bacteremia and prevents the proliferation of harmful bacteria in the intestine, keeping the bacterial flora balanced. In the brain it is converted into glutamic acid, fuel for brain cells which is converted into GABA, a substance that protects the nervous system from the toxic action of ammonia, and consequently performs a protective function on the CNS.
