COPD

COPD, which stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is a disease of the airways characterized by chronic cough, sputum and dyspnea.

It is defined by the GOLD guidelines as “a nosological picture characterized by a persistent obstruction to the air flow. This reduction is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response to the inhalation of cigarette smoke or harmful particles ”.

It is therefore a progressive disease, of inflammatory origin, which can involve even important changes in lifestyle habits, with limitations in daily activities.

The main risk factor for the disease is exposure to cigarette smoke and airborne pollutants.

COPD flare-ups

Frequently, respiratory tract infections or exposure to cold and pollution cause exacerbations, i.e. a worsening of the chronic symptoms of the disease that manifests itself suddenly with an increase in cough and sputum that becomes purulent, dyspnoea and sometimes fever. If particularly severe, exacerbations require hospital treatment.

It is important that the disease and its exacerbations are managed by the doctor, who suggests the most suitable behavioral measures and prescribes a plan of treatment and periodic control of the state of the disease.
