Cod liver oil
Dietary supplement
Description
Remedy for rickets, a defect in bone calcification caused by the reduced intake of vitamin D, fortunately rare today, but which in the past has affected many children
Cod liver oil is back in the limelight thanks to the great nutritional importance attributed to omega 3 fatty acids, of which it is particularly rich. On average, the weight of the liver of an adult cod is 2.5-2.6 grams per 100 grams of fish; its oil content is around 30%.
The anti-rachitic action of cod liver oil, together with the effect of sunlight, improves the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and increases their deposit in the teeth and bones, making them less prone to fractures. For this reason it is considered a valid dietary supplement in the treatment of osteoporosis and osteomalacia.
The benefits of cod liver oil
Vitamin A
Protective epithelial action at the level of the eyes, skin, mucous membranes and the immune system. Increased resistance to respiratory tract infections; good antioxidant action.
Vitamin D
Increased absorption of calcium in the intestine, with positive repercussions on bone formation and growth.
Vitamin E
It is a very important antioxidant, which helps protect against damage caused by smoking and pollution.
Iodine
Essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland; the hormones it produces from iodine are essential for baby's growth and brain development.
Omega three
Development and functionality of the brain, retina and nervous tissue in general; they have hypotryglyceride-lowering, antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory action; they are therefore particularly useful for heart patients (they preserve the elasticity and health of the arterial walls) and improve the effectiveness of the immune system.
Cod liver oil was, and in some cases is still used, in the presence of hypovitaminosis due to vitamin A and D deficiency. synthesizes it by exploiting the sunlight that filters through the water. Outside of this food, dietary sources of vitamin D are few in number and mostly limited to the liver of ruminants, egg yolk, cheese, mushrooms and sardines. It must be said, however, that the need for this vitamin is very low, since the body is able to synthesize it in the skin following sun exposure. The classic symptom associated with a vitamin A deficiency is impaired twilight vision, or a loss of acuity
