Crataegus oxyacantha Med. - Young shoots - Hawthorn.

Glycerolacolic macerate obtained from maceration in alcohol and glycerin of fresh embryonic vegetable tissues, according to the ratio 1:20 and subsequently diluted to 1D.

HAWTHORN

Family: Rosaceae

Species: Crataegus oxyacantha L.

Habitat: Everywhere from the plains to the mountainous areas in bushes and scrubs.

Part used: Flowering tops, berries, young shoots.

Harvest period: Spring (berries in autumn).

Shrub or sapling up to 4-5 meters high, thorny with divided leaves and spherical red berries bearing multiple seeds. It can be confused with the sp. monogyna from which it is distinguished mainly by the number of seeds which in the latter are one per berry (precisely monogyna). Many mistakenly confuse the hawthorn with the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) which in addition to being smaller blooms before emitting the leaves and has larger and purplish berries.

Curiosity

The name is an evident reference to the white flowers gathered in dense corymbs and to the thorns. Together with the blackthorn and the bramble, unlike today, its growth was favored by the farmers along the edges of the fields as in addition to constituting an almost impenetrable physical barrier, they favored the refuge or nesting of insectivorous birds and predatory insects which in turn they limited the presence of parasitic insects on crops.

Active principles:

Flavonoids 1-2.5% (vitexin, quercetin, hyperoside), triterpenes 1.5% (ursolic, crategolic, oleanolic acid), amines (phenethylanine, tiratin, choline, acetylcholine), phenolic acids, catechins, aminopurines, essential oils ( traces).
