Silicon is an element of the periodic table that is below carbon with the atomic number 14. Silicon is always detected with oxygen. Together, they are the most common elements in our environment and form over 50% of the elements in the earth's crust.

Silicon is one of the essential elements of living matter and, after iron and zinc, is the third most abundant trace element in the human body. Silicon is contained in all cells and tissues but is particularly prevalent in connective tissues.

Connective tissue is a vital component of the health of every organ in the body. Connective tissue makes up a variety of physical structures, including joints, cartilage, bones, skin (nails and hair), and blood vessels, including the heart. Hence, organs require silicon to restore or maintain their health and balance but, with the aging process, the concentration of silicon present in the organs apparently decreases irreversibly.

Silicon deficiency negatively affects organs and tissues that contain collagen. It has not yet been fully understood how or why this happens, but the silicon atom appears to remain within the collagen, perhaps acting as a "glue" for the individual collagen fibers. In general, the structure of collagen, like the famous DNA molecule, is coiled, providing cells and organs with their elasticity and ease of fluid movement. Silicon could therefore be vital for the spiral structure of collagen and its uniform and elastic movement. Collagen provides strength and flexibility to connective tissue which, in turn, provides health and well-being to all organs in the body, from the brain to skin and bones.

The European Parliament has issued a directive authorizing the placing on the market of organic silicon (monomethylsilanetriol) as a novel food ingredient pursuant to Regulation (EC) no. 258/97 of the European Parliament and of the Council.
