Keyword:
tachycardia, hypertension, anxiety.

Characteristics:
It is useful against cardiac disorders of nervous origin, excessive fatigue of the heart and aging of the heart. Weakening of the myocardium after an infection, palpitations and a sense of apprehension. Cactus grandiflorus is remembered for its cardiac, stimulating and diuretic properties, expressed by a mix of active ingredients known as cactin and ordenine. Cactin is used in the treatment of heart failure resulting from an excess of caffeine or tobacco or caused by nervous disorders; hordenine is a cardiac tonic and has hypotensive capacities. The root of the Valerian plant, with its unmistakable unpleasant odor, contains essential oils (esters of valeric acid, esters of valeric acid, caryophyllene, terpinolene, valerenol, valerenal and diterpene compounds known as iridoids), some alkaloids (valerine , actinidin, cathinine and alpha-pyrylketone) and flavonoids (linarin, 6-methylapigenin and hesperidin). The mechanism of action of its constituents is quite well known. The ability to inhibit the enzyme (gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase) responsible for the metabolic degradation of the gamma-aminobutyric neurotransmitter (GABA) is due to the esters of valeric acids and iridoids. This chemical mediator is responsible for the regulation of neuronal excitability in the whole nervous system of the sensation of relaxation also of the induction of sleep. Not surprisingly, many drugs with calming, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant and hypnotic action, act by stimulating the GABA receptors (in technical terms they are said to be its receptor agonists). Due to the presence of these active ingredients, valerian has sedative, relaxing and hypno-inducing properties, that is, it promotes sleep. By reducing the time needed to fall asleep and improving its quality, valerian is indicated in all its ailments, insomnia and anxiety. Finally, it seems that some of the terpenes and flavonoids can act as agonists with adenosine receptors and be partly responsible for the spasmolytic action on smooth muscle, useful in case of cramps and irritable bowel syndrome.
