Tamarindo Erba Carlo Erba - Tamarindo Erba Extract Syrup
Tamarind is an evergreen plant ( Tamarindusindica ) that belongs to the Leguminosae family.
It is native to Madagascar and widespread in India, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Asian countries, where it has become a staple of oriental cuisine.
The most used parts of the plant are the fruits and leaves.
The fruits consist of pods that can contain from 4 to 12 seeds and the seeds are wrapped in an edible pulp, which constitutes 55% of the whole fruit, dark brown in color and with a slightly acidic taste.
The pulp is the most used part: in Italy its main use is in the form of syrup or jam, abroad it is used above all for the preparation of sauces and soups.
In the past, the fruit pulp was used in traditional medicine: the pulp was purified by immersing it in boiling distilled water, and then passed with a horsehair sieve.
The liquid was then concentrated to obtain a soft extract, brown-black in color and with a decidedly acid taste, which determined a laxative effect.
The leaves, in the eastern countries, are used for the preparation of herbal teas against malarial fevers.
Traditionally, the Tamarindus indica plant has been used for: wound healing, snakebite, abdominal pain, colds, inflammation, diarrhea, helminth infections and fever.
It may also play a role as an antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and may have an effect on satiety control, playing a potential role in the treatment or prevention of obesity and other chronic diseases.
The tamarind pulp has a very high nutritional importance, because it is rich in proteins, fibers, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
For this reason, tamarind extract can be considered a nutraceutical product, that is a product extracted from plants, animals, minerals and microorganisms sharing a beneficial function on human health.
Finally, tamarind remineralizes the circulation, supports the structure of the bones, promotes ebergetic metabolism and psychophysical well-being, regulates blood pressure, has an antioxidant action, reduces cholesterol, fights anemia, protects the stomach and liver, promotes drainage liquids.
