There are basically 2 types of urostomy surgery: ureterocutaneostomy and ureteroileocutaneostomy (or Bricker urostomy). In both cases the urine will no longer flow in the normal way (from the kidneys to the bladder and then be expelled through the urethra) but will follow alternative routes.

In ureteocutaneostomy the 2 ureters can be topped up on the skin surface (bilateral ureterocutaneostomy - 2 ostomies) or one ureter can be connected to the other and therefore in this case we will have only one ureter topped up on the skin surface (unilateral ureterocutaneostomy - 1 ostomy). The urine flowing from the kidneys along the ureters will reach the skin where it will have to be collected by a pouch for each ostomy created. The use of ureterocutaneostomy braces is generally indicated to keep the ureters open and to convey urine correctly into the urostomy bag.

With ureterileocutaneostomy (or Bricker), urine will flow from the kidneys along the ureters and will then be diverted from an "ileal duct" to the surface, through an opening ("stoma") in the abdomen. The ileal duct opens on the surface in the form of a urostomy with an identical appearance to that of an ileostomy (it is in fact formed by a tract of the ileum) except that in this case urine will come out of the stoma and not feces as in the case of an intestinal ostomy. The stoma is normally placed on the right side of the abdomen and a bag is required to collect urine. The urostomy bags are closed to collect urine but have a tap on the bottom for emptying it.
