Cardio-vascular regulator, coronary dilator and modifier of cardiac trophism.


Hawthorn contains essential oil, crategic acid and other active ingredients of which three groups of substances have been isolated:
1) - pentacid triterpenic compounds
2) - glucoside compounds with a flavonoid structure
3) - catechins, phenolic acids and aminopurines. All these substances intervene to give the plant a hypotensive action (coronary-dilating action of ursolic acid), tonogenic on the heart muscle, thanks to the action of substances with a flavonic structure (quercetin and vitexin); these substances would favor the reabsorption of calcium in the heart muscle by acting above all on the enzyme c-AMP-phosphodiestarase and thus determining a tonic action on the heart; finally, another active ingredient (crategic acid) would directly influence cardiac trophism by acting on the metabolism of lactic acid and on the oxidation of pyruvic, citric and succinic acids.
