Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a plant of European and Asian origin, cultivated for centuries for medicinal purposes for its roots.

Traditionally known and used throughout the world as a sleep inducer, valerian is considered one of the most active phytocomplexes on the nervous system.

Its roots, rich in sesquiterpenes, in particular isovalerenic acid, have a sedative and muscle relaxant activity and are an effective remedy to promote well-being and relaxation.

Valerian can be a useful adjuvant in the reduction of emotional disorders such as palpitations, excessive sweating, digestive disorders and neuralgia.

This plant appears to act as a nervous system depressant and is used in sleep disorders associated with stress and anxiety.

A peculiarity of valerian is its characteristic odor: during drying, in fact, acids with 4-6 carbon atoms are released, including butyric, valerenic and caproic, from the relative esters that give the plant its typical odor.

Valerian shows sedative and hypnotic activity and its consumption is associated with the reduction of the REM phase during the first part of the night and its increase in the subsequent phases of sleep.

Taking valerian has shown good results in ailments such as menopause, restless legs syndrome and psychosomatic problems.

A muscle relaxant action is also observed at the level of smooth muscle which can be useful in dysmenorrhea and in other conditions in which an antispasmodic action is required.
