Alabaster is a mineral that is still extracted and worked by hand in Tuscany and is famous for its transparency and its veins, which make it particularly suitable for containing light sources. Already known since ancient times, it was also used for vases and containers of all kinds, especially for ointments and perfumes: it was believed that it preserved them better than any other material.
